If you had a Michigan street address and subscribed to a The Economist Publication to be delivered to a Michigan street address or electronically between February 4, 2015, and July 30, 2016, you may be entitled to a payment.

What Is This Lawsuit About?

This lawsuit claims that Defendant violated Michigan’s Preservation of Personal Privacy Act, H.B. 5331, 84th Leg. Reg. Sess., P.A. No. 378 §§ 1-4, id. § 5, added by H.B. 4694, 85th Leg. Reg. Sess., P.A. No. 206, § 1 (Mich. 1989) (the “PPPA”), by disclosing information related to its customers’ magazine subscriptions to third parties before July 30, 2016. The Defendant denies it violated any law. The Court has not determined who is right. Rather, the Parties have agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid the uncertainties and expenses associated with ongoing litigation.

 

Who Is in the Settlement Class?

The Court decided that everyone who fits the following description is a member of the Settlement Class:

    All persons with a Michigan street address who subscribed to a The Economist Publication to be delivered to a Michigan street address or electronically between February 4, 2015, and July 30, 2016.

 

What Does this Settlement Provide?

A Settlement Fund has been created totaling $9,500,000.00. Class Member payments, and the cost to administer the Settlement, the cost to inform people about the Settlement, attorneys’ fees (inclusive of litigation costs), and an award to the Class Representative will also come out of this fund.

Description
DO NOTHING You will receive a pro rata share of the Settlement benefits – estimated to be approximately $261 – and will give up your rights to sue the Defendant about the claims in this case.
FILE AN ELECTION OR CLAIM FORM
April 12, 2023 - Passed		 You only needed to file a claim form if you did NOT receive a Notice. The deadline to submit a Claim Form has passed. However, if you received a Notice and would've liked to receive your payment via Venmo or PayPal (rather than as a mailed check), you could've filed an Election Form. The deadline to file an Election Form has passed.
EXCLUDE YOURSELF
February 20, 2023 - Passed		 You could have requested to exclude yourself from the Settlement. You would receive no benefits, but retain any rights you have to sue the Defendant about the claims in this case.
OBJECT
February 20, 2023 - Passed		 You could have written to the Court explaining why you didn't like the Settlement.
GO TO HEARING
March 15, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. EST - Passed		 You could have asked to speak in Court about your opinion of the Settlement on or before March 15, 2023.
